The New Straits Times have released the article below on 29th of November indicating a possible disruption to 2G services. Tracking telematics (GPS/GSM) units using GPRS for data communications are likely to face delayed information update. For those users where security of their goods is paramount, our advice is to switch to newer 3G based tracking units. Mobile users to face temporary service disruption until June next year
BY THARANYA ARUMUGAM – 29 NOVEMBER 2016 @ 6:55 PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Mobile users may face temporary service disruptions following a spectrum relocation exercise, which was recently announced by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Communications and Multimedia Consumer Forum of Malaysia (CFM), in a statement today said 2G customers primarily could experience dropped calls and/or SMS/messaging delays during this period.
Telecommunications Service Providers (SPs), it said has been scheduling recalibration work on their base stations nationwide since September 2016 until June 2017 as part of the spectrum reallocation exercise.
Although CFM expects the process will run smoothly with minimal inconvenience to mobile subscribers, consumers it said should be aware of what to expect and where to seek more information on the matter.
“To minimise the impact of this migration exercise to the general public during the said migration period, the SPs have scheduled for selected stations to be reconfigured between 12AM to 6AM.
“However, the timing of the process taken may vary subject to the respective SPs.
“Consumers may be facing temporary service disruptions primarily for 2G customers who might experience dropped calls and/or SMS/messaging delays during this period.”
CFM advised consumers to contact their respective SPs for further assistance should they experience prolonged service disruption.
